AI and disinformation are rampant in Philippine politics
The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) and disinformation in the political arena of the Philippines is causing tension in the country. Recently, AI-generated videos, deepfakes and false propaganda have been spreading widely on social media, which has threatened the country’s democratic process. The country’s opposition leaders have claimed that false statements and deepfakes by politicians are going viral on social media, which is causing confusion in the public mind. Allegations are that the ruling party is using AI technology to spread false information against them. Human rights organizations have demanded urgent intervention to stop the misuse of AI and disinformation. The Philippines still does not have strong laws to regulate AI and disinformation. Meanwhile, the United States and the European Union have expressed concern about the situation in the Philippines and offered to help protect digital democracy.
