35 percent tariff: Dhaka is holding trade talks with Washington
Dhaka is holding trade talks with Washington over the US’s imposition of 35 percent tariff on Bangladeshi goods, said Shafiqul Alam, the press secretary to the chief adviser. He made this known in a post on his verified Facebook account at around 9 am on Tuesday (July 8). In the post, he wrote that Sheikh Bashiruddin, the trade advisor to the Bangladesh government, is currently in the US capital, Washington DC. He is leading the Bangladesh delegation. National Security Advisor Dr. Khalilur Rahman is also in the group. He added that the Bangladesh delegation has already held several rounds of discussions with US officials. Another meeting is scheduled to be held on July 9, where Sheikh Bashiruddin will lead Bangladesh’s side. Dhaka hopes that it will be possible to reach a reasonable tariff agreement with Washington, which will be beneficial for both countries. It is worth noting that after three months of negotiations, US President Donald Trump has imposed a 35 percent tariff on goods imported from Bangladesh. He made this announcement on his social media account Truth Social on Monday. Earlier, Trump imposed a 37 percent tariff on Bangladeshi goods last April. Which came into effect from April 9. However, due to the turbulent situation in the global economy, he suspended these tariffs for 3 months. Which ends on July 9. Before that, he imposed a new 35 percent tariff on Bangladeshi goods.
