    Jamaat meets with EC after a decade

    Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has held a meeting with the Election Commission (EC) after a long time. The meeting is being held at the Election Commission (EC) building in Agargaon in the capital today, Thursday.

    A six-member delegation led by Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar is in the meeting. In addition, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, four Election Commissioners Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar, Abdur Rahmanel Masud, Tahmida Ahmed and Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah and EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed are present in the meeting.

    EC officials said that the party’s last contact with the Election Commission before the cancellation of registration was on December 2, 2012. At that time, the party submitted amendments to its constitution to save its registration.

    Earlier, a BNP delegation met with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and election commissioners on Sunday (February 9). The delegation, led by the party’s standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, also included standing committee members Salahuddin Ahmed and Selima Rahman.

    It is worth noting that the next national parliamentary elections could be held by December this year, said Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government. The Election Commission said that they have been preparing for the national elections since December.
