The murder case has not been solved in 13 years
Tuesday marks 13 years since the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi. The investigation into this murder case, which has been discussed across the country, has not ended even after this long period. The investigation officer has been changed 6 times in the case so far; the time for submitting the investigation report has been postponed 115 times. The investigation agency was also changed last year. But the mystery of the murder has not been solved. The investigation is still progressing with the issue of the thief who cut the grill in front of him. The task force formed by the High Court and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) authorities are also investigating whether there was any other motive behind the murder.
Last year, the High Court transferred the investigation of the case from RAB to PBI to solve the mystery of the Sagar-Runi murder. In addition, a high-level task force was also formed.
Task force chairman and PBI chief Mustafa Kamal told our time, “We are conducting a multi-pronged investigation to unravel the mystery of the Sagar-Runi murder.” We have already formally questioned 35 people. We are talking to many informally. We are investigating as much as we can when we get the information.
Meanwhile, after the political change on August 5 last year, the brother of the plaintiff in the case, Runi, has started to see a ray of hope. He told Amre Soomi on Sunday, I am optimistic about the new investigation that has started after the change of power in the country. The investigators have spoken to me. I can see their sincerity in the investigation.
To unravel the mystery of the murder of the journalist couple, the investigating authorities have questioned dismissed army officer Major General Ziaul Ahsan (former RAB officer), former Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) of Lalbagh Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police Moshiur Rahman, and Chairman of private television channel ATN Bangla Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman; they have spoken to at least a dozen journalists. Former spokesperson of RAB Rear Admiral Mohammad Sohail, who is in prison, will also be questioned. In addition, the PBI is investigating most of the reports that came to the media after this sensational murder.
On February 11, 2012, journalist couple Sagar and Runi were murdered in a rented house in West Rajabazar in the capital. After the murder, the investigation of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police revealed that the grill thieves committed the incident. They also arrested 4 grill thieves. But in the end, the 4 thieves were not added to the case file. After taking over the investigation, the PBI initially visited the scene. In addition, in the continuation of the investigation by RAB and the Detective Police, the investigation is investigating whether the grill thieves committed the murder of Sagar and Runi. It is also investigating whether the couple was murdered due to a report by the private energy company Summit. It is also investigating whether the incident occurred for any other reason.
The PBI is investigating all possible aspects including theft or robbery, family and marital strife, professional conflicts, past enmity, debts, keeping important information, love affairs and aggrieved persons in the preparation of news reports. In addition, the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police is also looking for the four grill thieves who were arrested in 2012. Although the names of the four people were found, the details of their identities were not found. As a result, investigators are trying to find them in various ways.
On October 23 last year, the Home Ministry formed a four-member task force to investigate the Sagar-Runi murder case. The task force was asked to complete the investigation and submit a report to the High Court within six months. On September 30 last year, the High Court transferred the responsibility of investigating the murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi from RAB and ordered a high-powered task force formed by the Home Ministry to investigate.
Supreme Court lawyer Manjil Morshed had filed a writ petition in the High Court for a proper investigation into the murder case. As there was no progress in the investigation of the case even after two months of the incident, he had petitioned the court to change the investigation officer of the case.
Sagar and Runi were brutally murdered at their residence in West Rajabazar in the capital on February 11, 2012. Sagar was the news editor of Maasranga Television and Runi was a senior reporter of ATN Bangla. In that incident, Runi’s brother Nausher Alam filed a case with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the capital. After the police station, the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) investigated the case. However, on April 18, 2012, when the DB admitted its failure, the High Court ordered RAB to investigate the case. The case was finally transferred to the PBI on November 4 last year.
