Nearly 50 bodies recovered from two mass graves in Libya
About 50 bodies have been recovered from two mass graves in the southeastern desert of Libya. These bodies are migrants and refugees who wanted to cross the country to Europe.
The country’s security department announced this information in a statement on Sunday.
It said that 19 bodies were recovered from a mass grave on a farm in the southeastern city of Kufra last Friday. Autopsies are being carried out on the recovered bodies.
According to Al Jazeera, the head of the Kufra security department, Mohammed al-Fadl, said that another mass grave was found during a raid on a detention camp in the city. At least 30 bodies were recovered from this grave.
He said that according to the statements of survivors, about 70 people were buried in this mass grave. The search for the mass grave is continuing.
Al-Abrin, a charity that helps migrants and refugees in eastern and southern Libya, said some of the bodies found in the mass graves were shot before being buried.
This is not the first time mass graves have been discovered in Libya. Last year, the bodies of at least 65 migrants were found in a mass grave in the Shuarif area south of the capital Tripoli.
