Seven college students announce ‘Dhaka blockade’

At least seven people were injured in a clash between students of Dhaka University and affiliated government colleges. Students of seven colleges have announced a blockade of Dhaka city from 9 am today, Monday.

Earlier, the students made this announcement at a press conference at Nilkhet intersection around 3 am on Sunday.

Abdur Rahman, a Dhaka College student and focal person of the Seven Colleges to University Transformation Team, said, “Dhaka city will be blockaded from 9 am today, Monday, to protest the attack on students. Students of seven colleges will observe a blockade program in their respective campus areas.”

Noting that Dhaka University has become an authoritarian institution, the student said, “We have been agitating for a long time to cancel the affiliation of seven colleges and demand the establishment of an independent university. Our demand was to conduct an admission test under an independent university from the current academic year. But Dhaka University did not do that. On the contrary, it has issued a notification for the admission of students exceeding the capacity.”

He also said, “We have submitted memorandums to various quarters regarding these matters. The last DU Pro-VC (Education) misbehaved with our students. In protest, while we were standing under the Nilkhet Toran, Dhaka University students and police attacked students of seven colleges.

Abdur Rahman said that seven colleges should be declared independent universities, saying, “The attack on students must be judged. Dhaka University Pro-VC Dr. Mamun Ahmed must be judged.”

Earlier, around 11 pm, students of seven colleges reached the Mukti and Ganatra Toran from in front of Dhaka College. At that time, students of Sir A.F. Rahman Hall took a position in front of the hall. At around 11:30 pm, the chase and counter-chase began. Dhaka University students chased the students of seven colleges from the DU campus and crossed the Nilkhet area. At least seven people were injured in the incident. Police fired two rounds of sound grenades to control the situation.

Earlier, at 10:30 pm, students entered the Dhaka College campus with a procession after lifting the blockade from the Science Lab intersection. Students from seven colleges announced that they would enter the DU campus with more students from the residential hall of Dhaka College and surround the Pro-VC’s residence.
