Israel approves Gaza ceasefire deal
The Israeli cabinet has finally approved the proposed ceasefire in the besieged Gaza Strip. It was approved on Friday night, the British media outlet BBC reported.
The report said that only two right-wing ministers opposed it. All the others were in favor. The ceasefire is scheduled to take effect on Sunday.
In a brief statement, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said that the Israeli government had approved the ceasefire agreement after more than six hours of meetings.
According to the agreement, Hamas will release 33 Israeli prisoners in the first phase, all of whom are women, children and men over the age of 50. Israel will withdraw its forces from the populated areas of Gaza to an area located more than 700 meters from the Gaza border with Israel.
Israel will allow civilians to return to their homes in northern Gaza and will allow 600 aid trucks to enter daily. If the conditions are met, the second phase of the agreement would include the release of all remaining hostages, a permanent ceasefire, and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza in exchange for the release of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.
