Mirza Fakhrul reveals ‘possible time’ for elections.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that elections are possible in the middle of this year in July-August. He made this statement at a press conference at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Tuesday afternoon.
BNP organized this press conference to highlight the topics discussed at the BNP Standing Committee meeting held on Monday night.
At the press conference, the BNP Secretary General said, ‘The meeting discussed in detail the statement of the Chief Advisor regarding the elections. The meeting felt that the political and economic crisis would gradually increase if the National Assembly elections were delayed.’
He said, ‘Since the Election Commission has already been formed, there is no reason to delay the National Assembly elections. There is no question of holding local government elections before the National Assembly elections. The elections are possible by July 2025.’
Mirza Fakhrul called on the interim government, the Election Commission and all political parties to come to a consensus on this issue.
Stating that the meeting discussed the Cyber Security Ordinance in detail, the BNP Secretary General said, “A decision was taken to hold a press conference with more detailed information about this law. In this regard, a committee was formed with National Standing Committee member Dr. Abdul Moin Khan as the head, Professor AKM Wahiduzzaman and Barrister Kaiser Kamal. The committee will immediately prepare a report on this issue.”
Expressing deep concern over the continuous rise in commodity prices, the BNP Secretary General said, “On the one hand, the increase in the prices of daily necessities, rising inflation, and on the other hand, the increase in VAT and other tax rates will have a negative impact on the economy. A decision was taken to hold a press conference with detailed information in this regard.”
“A committee was formed with National Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury as the convener and Ismail Zabiullah, advisor to the chairperson. This committee will immediately prepare a detailed report on this issue,” said Mirza Fakhrul.
