Tarique Rahman expresses solidarity with South Korea’s democratic movement.

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has fully supported the people of South Korea who are continuing their struggle for democracy.

In an English statement on his verified Facebook page, Tarique Rahman called it a “repressive regime”. He mentioned finding similarities between the South Korean struggle for democratic rule and Bangladesh’s decade-long struggle.

Tarique Rahman furthered, “I extend my solidarity to the brave people of South Korea who are struggling for democracy.”

Reciting his experience of facing political oppression, Rahman wrote, “In Bangladesh we have faced a repressive regime for more than a decade, we can deeply feel the pain, the patience and determination that is needed to face oppression.”

He further decried democratic processes abused by the elected government and said it was a shared concern for both nations.

“Both our nations are conscious of the risks of elected governments abusing democratic loopholes to serve their interests,” he added.

He underlined the indomitable power of a determined people in the success of pro-democracy movements in both countries.

Urging political leaders and citizens to be vigilant to avoid future threats to democracy, Tarique Rahman said, “By building strong democratic institutions, we can protect the rights of our people and ensure a just and free society.”
