‘Sheikh Hasina will be sued in the International Court of Justice’.
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be sued in the International Crimes Tribunal, said Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He mentioned that the case will be filed for genocide and crimes against humanity.
International Crimes Tribunal (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Karim A Khan paid a courtesy call on the Chief Advisor at the Jamuna State Guest House in Dhaka on Wednesday. The Chief Advisor said this at the time.
They also discussed the Rohingya crisis, the situation in Myanmar, humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya, and the trial and accountability for atrocities during the July-August mass movement.
ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim A Khan informed the Chief Advisor that the ICC office has formally requested an arrest warrant against Myanmar’s military government chief Min Aung Hlaing for crimes against humanity against the Rohingya minority.
Karim Khan supported the call of the Chief Adviser to hold a special international conference on the Rohingya crisis. Meanwhile, the UN General Assembly has also approved the organization of this conference in 2025.
In this context, the Chief Adviser said, “This conference will help bring together all international stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the crisis, especially the plight of the Rohingya and their children in the camps in Bangladesh.”
Regarding the youth drowning in the depression in the Rohingya camps, Yunus said, “We need to ensure that it does not explode.”
With a view to the security of Myanmar’s Rakhine State and establishing it as a safe zone, the Chief Adviser said, “This safe zone will be effective in assisting displaced people and addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The security of this zone should be ensured by the UN. When the fighting stops, the people in this safe zone will be able to easily return to their respective places.”
Dr. Yunus said, “The interim government will bring charges against Sheikh Hasina’s government at the ICC for crimes against humanity, which include killings during the July-August mass movement and thousands of disappearances during her nearly 16-year-long rule.”
The ICC Chief Prosecutor said they want to cooperate with the International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh. The court has issued arrest warrants against Sheikh Hasina and members of her political party.
Khalilur Rahman, High Representative of the Principal Advisor on Rohingya Affairs, Lamia Morshed, Principal Coordinator for SDGs in the Principal Advisor’s Office, and Riaz Hamidullah, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were present at the meeting.
High Representative for Rohingya Affairs Khalilur Rahman said, “Bangladesh is one of the first Asian countries to sign the Rome Statute establishing the ICC and we look forward to deepening our cooperation in the coming days.”
