People’s interest in National Pension Scheme has decreased
The late Sheikh Hasina’s government launched the universal pension program to make the elderly life happy and comfortable with the slogan ‘The future will be full of happiness, pension is now universal’.
Although there was a huge response in the beginning, now the interest of the customers has waned. As a result, the registered customers are doubtful about the success of the program in the future. However, the government has said that the program will continue after the temporary suspension and some new facilities will be added.
According to the pension authority, the enrollment has dropped due to disruption of campaign activities after the change of government. A new campaign is currently being planned. More steps are being taken to increase awareness including distribution of posters through the District Commissioner nationwide.
According to Finance Department sources, the interim government has decided to strengthen the Universal Pension Scheme (UPS) to bring people from all walks of life under social security. To this end, initiatives have been taken to pay annual profits in pension schemes. The authority has decided to pay at least eight percent profit on deposits made by October every year.
National Pension Authority (NPA) member Ghulam Mustafa told Daily Our Time that the lack of campaign has reduced the interest of the general public. Initiatives have been taken to increase the campaign. Already the annual profit has been credited to the customer’s account. The speed is expected to increase further as new features are added to speed up the scheme.
According to NPA sources, a total of 3 lakh 72 thousand 487 customers have been enrolled in these four pension schemes – Pravas, Pragati, Sukharka and Samata – till Monday and about 132 crores have been deposited. The most popular of these is the Samata scheme. 78 percent of total customers are registered in it.
The monthly installment is one thousand taka, of which taka 500 is paid by the customer and the remaining taka 500 is paid by the government. The total registered number is 2 lakh 85 thousand 884 and 41 crore 70 lakh taka have been deposited.
There is progress scheme for private sector employees. 22 thousand 410 customers have been added to it and 47 crore 25 lakhs have been deposited. Pravas scheme for those working abroad. Expatriates lag behind in registration and contribution. 910 people are registered in this scheme and the contribution is Tk 4 crore 85 lakh.
Protection scheme for self-employed persons, where 63 thousand 174 people have contributed Tk. 37 crore 16 lakh. Self-employed people, such as farmers, rickshaw pullers, labourers, blacksmiths, potters, fishermen, weavers etc. But apart from this, two programs named ‘Pratya’ and ‘Sevak’ were cancelled.
Launched on August 17, 2023, the program aims to bring the people of the country under a sustainable social security system. Besides adding new features to increase the popularity, the authorities have taken the initiative to strengthen the campaign activities.
