Early voting begins in the US presidential election

Early voting for the upcoming US presidential election has begun. Voting began on Saturday in the contested state of North Carolina. This information is known from a report of the American media Voice of America.

State Board of Elections Executive Director Karen Brinson Bell said direct voting begins 17 days in advance at 400 locations in all 100 counties. But in the 25 counties in the western region that were heavily damaged by the storm, only 4 out of 80 polling stations are not open for early voting.

Outlying towns across Appalachia were wiped out and 246 people lost their lives, more than half of the storm’s deaths in North Carolina, after Helen hit the US Southwest three weeks ago.

Joyce Rich, a 77-year-old woman who said she was able to vote early on an emergency basis because of Hurricane Helen. Rich said her home was somewhat spared in the storm, but she and her husband will have to work on it. “So we decided to go and get this (voting) done,” Rich said.

Direct early voting is very popular in North Carolina. This early election will continue till November 2. In the 2020 general election, more than 36 lakh ballots – 65 per cent of the total votes cast – were cast in advance in this way. In the 2016 election, 62 percent of the voters voted directly in advance.

The 25 counties affected by the tornado are still considering Election Day polling stations. It is expected that most polling stations will be opened for voters.
