The use of polythene bags is being stopped in supershops from today
According to the previous instructions of the interim government, the use of polythene is prohibited in all supershops of the country from today. As an alternative, the Department of Environment has ordered to keep jute and cloth bags for customers to purchase in or in front of all supershops. In the meantime, the use of polythene has been stopped in daily shopping, Swapna, Agora, said the concerned.
Managers of Supershop outlets said that they have already issued notices in different places of the shop. The tissue bags, mesh bags they had were removed. Various shapes of bags made of jute are being provided by the Department of Environment. The price of which is from 6 to 17 taka. Customers have to buy them.
This decision was taken in a meeting held with the stakeholders to formulate an action plan to implement the ban on polythene shopping bags in the meeting room of the ministry at the secretariat on September 9.
Earlier, according to the provisions of the Environment Protection Act 1995, the government officially banned polythene bags in Bangladesh on March 1, 2002. At that time, the Department of Environment conditionally banned the production, import, marketing, sale, storage and distribution of all types of polythene shopping bags. Since the ban was imposed in 2002, 931 tonnes of polythene has been seized. 52 factories were evacuated.
