Heavy rains and upstream hill slopes have increased the Teesta river. As a result, thousands of families along the banks of the Teesta river have become trapped in water. There is a shortage of clean water and food.
52.17 meters water flow was recorded at Dalia Point of Teesta Barrage, the country’s largest irrigation project in Doani of Hatibandha Upazila of Lalmonirhat at 6 am on Sunday. which flows 2 cm above the danger limit (normal 52.15 meters). Hundreds of thousands of families along the banks of the Teesta have become waterlogged.
The flood warning center and Charbasi said that the Teesta river has entered Bangladesh from its source in Sikkim in India. Neighboring India is using the Teesta water for its own benefit by building a dam upstream of the Bangladesh part of the river. During monsoons, excess water is released to the Bangladesh side by opening the Ghazaldoba gate. Similarly, the Indian government is using Teesta water exclusively by closing the gates during the dry season and turning Bangladesh into a desert.
Upstream India is experiencing heavy rainfall as the monsoon season begins. As a result, excess water is being released in the Bangladesh part. The water of Teesta is increasing greatly due to this upstream flow. At the same time, several days of continuous heavy rains have been added. As a result, the water level of Teesta river has increased and is touching the danger limit.
According to the Meteorological Department, there is a trend of very heavy rainfall in Rangpur division and adjacent uplands till Saturday. As a result, the water level of Teesta river may rise rapidly for the next two days and the water level may remain stable for the next one day. Teesta river water may flow in plain warning limit till next two days. Grasslands and low-lying areas along the river may be flooded.
Several roads, bridges and culverts in the riverside area have been broken by the water. Growing Aman paddy and various vegetable fields are submerged in flood water. Farmers fear serious damage to these crops if they remain submerged for a long time. At the same time, several ponds were washed away by the flood water.
