Dr. Yunus – Joe Biden meeting will be in New York

This time on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session, US President Joe Biden’s chief advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus is going to have a bilateral meeting.

The top leaders of Bangladesh and the United States will meet at the UN headquarters in New York on September.

There was no such meeting with any head of state or government of Bangladesh in the last three decades.

Sources in Dhaka and New York said that last Thursday afternoon, Washington finalized the Yunus-Biden meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session. In view of this, instead of 24 September Dr. Yunus will leave for New York on September 23.

    Joe Biden

According to some Bangladeshi diplomats who have experience working in New York, the President of the United States usually arrives in New York on the morning of his scheduled speech at the United Nations. He addressed the session of the General Council that day. Later in the afternoon he organized a reception in honor of the heads of state and government coming to the UN session.

Bilateral meetings between the President of the United States and the top leader of a country during a session of the UN General Assembly are almost rare. In the last three decades, there has been no meeting between the President of the United States and any top leader of Bangladesh on the sidelines of the United Nations session.

When asked about the significance of Joe Biden’s meeting with Dr. Yunus in New York, several senior diplomats of Bangladesh said that after the interim government took over on August 8, a high-level delegation of the United States visited Dhaka on September 15. And this time within two weeks, President Joe Biden is going to meet with the chief adviser of the interim government.

In addition to the meeting with Joe Biden, Yunus will also meet with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen during his visit to New York. Apart from this, reliable sources say that World Bank President Ajay Banga and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva will meet with the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh.

According to diplomatic analysts, various meetings during Dr. Yunus’ New York visit are significant for Bangladesh. Especially, there are indications that the western world and international financial organizations will be strongly associated with the current government of Bangladesh.
