Ziaur Rahman-Khaleda Zia’s graves open to all
The graves of martyred President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia have been opened to the public. It was opened for public entry on Thursday (January 1) afternoon. Many party leaders and workers, including the general public, had gathered in the area since morning to pay their respects to Khaleda Zia. As the garden was closed, many people are waiting near the barricade at the entrance of the garden at Bijoy Samarani intersection. Many who could not go to the grave are standing on the road and offering prayers. It is learned that the entrance was closed due to renovation work. Now it has been opened. Along with the police, members of other forces are also providing security in the entire garden.
The funeral of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was held at around 3 pm yesterday, Wednesday (December 31) under the leadership of Khatib Abdul Malek of the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram. Later, at 4:45 pm, she was buried with full state honours at the Zia Udyan in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar next to the grave of her husband, martyred President Ziaur Rahman. Begum Khaleda Zia died at 6 am on Tuesday (December 30) while undergoing treatment at the capital’s Evercare Hospital. It is worth noting that she was admitted to the hospital on November 23 with breathing difficulties due to a lung infection. Later, pneumonia developed and old complications including kidney, liver, arthritis and diabetes worsened. As her physical condition deteriorated, she was taken to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where she remained under treatment until her death.
