Youth dies in landslide in Sunamganj

A youth named Arman Mia (24) tragically died in a landslide in Madhyanagar, Sunamganj. The accident occurred while removing the collapsed soil of the Shaulduari dam of Gurmar Haor in Madhyanagar on Sunday afternoon (April 12). Arman is the only son of Chanpar Mia of Shaliani village of the upazila.
According to local sources, due to continuous heavy rains for several days, the crops of the vast land of Rupeshwar Haor were about to be submerged in waterlogging. On Friday (April 10) night, local farmers cut a part of the Shaulduari dam of sub-project number 8 of Gurmar Haor without the permission of the administration to drain the water. After cutting the dam, the bank collapsed due to the strong current of water and the water flow stopped. Then yesterday morning, some farmers including Arman went to remove it. When the work was almost finished around noon, the dam suddenly collapsed again and Arman was buried under the ground.
After about an hour of efforts, he was rescued and taken to Dharmapasha Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead. Madhyanagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (Acting) Sanjay Ghosh said, the administration was not informed about the dam cutting. Such a loss of life while saving the crops is very unfortunate.
