Youth commits suicide on charges of stealing ducks

A huge scandal has arisen in Faridganj over the duck theft incident. After being given a nose job and a fine of Tk 5,000 as punishment for theft, a youth named Masum (19) committed suicide by hanging himself. The incident took place on Sunday (March 8) in Mijibari of Charmathura village in Gobindapur Uttar Union of the upazila. The police recovered the body the same night after receiving information.
It is learnt that Masum (19), the eldest son of Alauddin Miji of Mijibari, and his accomplice stole two Chinese ducks and a domestic duck from Nayan Patwari of the neighboring patwari’s house on Friday (March 6) night. That night, they sold the three stolen ducks to Nayan Patwari’s cousin Rabeya for Tk 1,400.
After the incident came to light on Saturday (March 7) morning, the youths of the area went to the house of accused Masum several times. At one point, UP member Mizanur Rahman held a mediation meeting with the locals yesterday morning. Masum was convicted in a theft case and fined Tk 5,000 on the spot by piercing his nose. After this incident, Masum committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in the afternoon without the knowledge of his family members.
Meanwhile, the locals said that Masum and several others were involved in petty thefts in the area without the knowledge of his family members. Also, there is a drug gang in the area. Upon hearing the news of the suicide, they went to the spot and saw that Masum’s relatives were crying over his body. They cannot accept this tragic death due to theft. They claim that houses have been repeatedly attacked, vandalized and Masum beaten up due to duck theft. Masum and his mother were insulted during the final trial yesterday. Masum was forced to pierce his nose in front of everyone. Therefore, he committed suicide without being able to bear the insult.
Masum’s mother Mousumi said that her eldest son Masum stole three ducks. From Saturday morning till night, the boys of the area beat and scolded her son several times for the theft. Yesterday morning, a trial was held under the leadership of a local Mizan member. In the trial, her son was found guilty, his nose was pierced and a fine of five thousand taka was imposed. During this time, they abused me and my son in various languages. After the trial, I went to the madrasa at around 3 pm. After going there, around 4 pm I got the news that my son, unable to bear the insult, committed suicide by hanging himself. Also, my house was vandalized in the theft case.
Masum’s aunt Sumi Begum said, I want justice for the death of my sister’s son. He was forced to commit suicide. Former UP member Abdul Gani said, I am the guardian of this house. There was a trial in the theft case in the area. But I was not informed about anything. I am not sure whether the trial was fair. However, this death cannot be accepted.
Nayan Patwari of Patwaribari said that three ducks were stolen from their house last Friday night. The next morning, I came to know that Masum and Al Amin had sold three ducks to my cousin Rabeya for Tk 1,400. Then we went to his house. But he behaved badly. Later, when I informed UP member Mizanur Rahman, he arranged for a trial. Local UP member Mizanur Rahman said, after learning about the duck theft, I sat in the trial with the people of the area. In the trial, I asked him to pay a fine of Tk 5,000 and get his nose pierced to stop the theft. He would get the money from the fine money. In the evening, I heard that he had committed suicide at his house. I reported the incident to the police. On receiving the news, the police recovered the body at night. The police confirmed that it has been sent to Chandpur for an autopsy today, Monday (March 9).
