Woman dies in cesarean section, Tk 3 lakh settlement
A young woman named Khadija Khatun (20) has allegedly died of excessive bleeding after a cesarean section in Madhupur, Tangail. However, the baby born through the cesarean section is alive. It is learnt that a Tk 3 lakh settlement was reached in the midnight meeting in this incident. The incident took place at Asia Hospital, a private clinic on Madhupur Hospital Road, at around 11 am on Friday (November 28). The deceased Khadija is the wife of Shaheen Mia, a Saudi expatriate from Bakta village in Keshoreganj area of Fulbaria upazila of Mymensingh.
The family said that this was Khadija’s second cesarean section. Mymensingh Medical College Hospital Assistant Professor Dr. Shimla Aftab Shaon performed the operation. Immediately after the cesarean section, Khadija’s body started bleeding profusely. Despite two bags of blood being given, her condition did not improve. Relatives allege that she was not allowed to meet the patient for a long time after the surgery and that her death was due to negligence.
Although Khadija was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in an ambulance in the evening, the family claims that Khadija died by then. In this regard, Manik Saha, one of the hospital’s directors, said that the allegations are not true. After the surgery, the patient was kept in the post-operative room and no one was allowed to go there.
He also said that the patient was already having difficulty breathing. He was advised to be taken to the ICU due to bleeding and difficulty breathing. Despite giving two bags of blood, his condition deteriorated. He claimed that the patient died due to the delay in taking him to Mymensingh. Meanwhile, when the news of Khadija’s death spread, relatives and locals started protesting at the hospital. Tension increased when relatives asked for medical documents and the hospital authorities did not provide them. Khadija’s relatives said that Khadija died due to blatant negligence in treatment.
On receiving the information, the police went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Later that night, settlement talks were held between the hospital administration and the deceased’s family under the mediation of local leaders. The meeting lasted till 11 pm. Meanwhile, in front of the hospital, several patients admitted for cesarean sections can be seen leaving the hospital.
