Why the sudden ‘March to Gopalganj’ program was announced needs to be investigated, BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie has commented. He made these remarks in his speech as the president at a meeting organized by the district BNP at Lakshmipur Balika Vidya Niketan ground on Friday (July 18) evening in memory of the martyrs on the occasion of the anniversary of the July-August uprising. Annie said, ‘Although the NCP has been giving public relations programs across the country, it suddenly announced the ‘March to Gopalganj’ program in a span of one day. How they went to Gopalganj, how they came out – needs to be investigated. Whether there is any nefarious motive behind this, we need to dig deep.’ He also said, ‘If Mujibabad has to be buried, there is no need to go to Gopalganj. Mujibism was laid to rest by Mujibism in 1972, 73, 74, 75, and the last 17 years of Sheikh Hasina’s rule have laid the grave for Mujibism.’ Regarding the government’s failure, Annie said, ‘After August 5, the government’s biggest responsibility was to provide security to the people and ensure a peaceful environment. But the Home Ministry has completely failed to fulfill that responsibility. Illegal weapons have not been recovered, and no effective operation has been carried out to arrest the terrorists who attacked.’ She further alleged, ‘Gopalganj has now become a sanctuary for terrorists. Army armored vehicles have also been attacked and set on fire. Yet the government has remained silent. This is very worrying.’ Abul Khair Bhuiyan, advisor to the BNP Chairperson, was present as the chief guest at the meeting. BNP’s Deputy Industrial and Commercial Affairs Secretary ABM Ashraf Uddin Nijan, Deputy Organizing Secretary Harun Or Rashid, District BNP Member Secretary Sahab Uddin Sabu, Bangladesh Football Federation Vice President Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy, District BNP Member Nizam Uddin Bhuiyan, District Bar Association President Monirul Islam Howlader and Raipur Municipality BNP Convener ABM Jilani were present as special guests.
