What the US said on the arrest of Chinmoy Das.
The issue of the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatani Jagran Jote, came up in a briefing by the US State Department. In response to a question, the country’s State Department said that detainees must be given due legal opportunity and treated with fundamental freedoms and human rights.
Principal Deputy Spokesperson of the US State Department Vedant Patel said this at the regular press briefing of the US State Department on Tuesday local time.
In the briefing, someone mentioned the issue of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh and asked if the US side had any plans to address this concern.
In response, Principal Deputy Spokesperson of the US State Department Vedant Patel said, ‘We work in harmony with every government with which we have relations – we have made it clear – there needs to be respect for fundamental freedoms, there needs to be respect for religious freedom and fundamental human rights. Any protest should be peaceful and any crackdown – even if it is not a crackdown – all governments must respect the rule of law and, as part of that, respect fundamental human rights. And we will continue to emphasize this.’
Later, the questioner asked about the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das. He said that Chinmoy Das is a celibate leader of ISKCON in Bangladesh. Also, Tulsi Gabbard, the proposed director of US National Intelligence, is also a member of ISKCON. Chinmoy Das has been illegally arrested, kept in jail and no lawyer in Bangladesh is willing to stand up for Chinmoy Krishna Das because his lawyer was beaten up and sent to the hospital. Will you take any action in this regard?
In response, Vedant Patel said, ‘I do not have any details of this case. But again, we insist, and have insisted, that those who are detained must be given adequate representation and treated with fundamental freedoms and human rights.’
