What the government said about the attack on BNP candidate in Chittagong

The interim government has strongly condemned the violent attack on the election campaign event of Ershad Ullah, the nominated candidate of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP for Chittagong-8 constituency.
A statement published on the verified Facebook page of the chief advisor on Wednesday (November 5) night said that an immediate investigation by the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) found that Ershad Ullah was not the target of the attack; he was hit by a single bullet. The government has ordered a full investigation into the incident. At the same time, the government wishes the injured Ershad Ullah a speedy recovery.
In addition to expressing deep concern over such criminal activities, the government reiterated its strong commitment to protecting the safety and rights of participants in the democratic process. The statement also said that the chief advisor, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has directed the security forces to identify, arrest and bring to justice the perpetrators as soon as possible.
Stating that there is no place for violence and intimidation in political and social life, the government said that the CMP has already launched an operation to arrest the attackers. The interim government has called on all political parties and their supporters to remain calm, exercise restraint and hold the February general elections in an atmosphere of peace, dignity and fairness. The interim government has also assured to take all necessary measures to ensure a safe and peaceful environment necessary for holding free, fair, acceptable and festive elections across the country. Incidentally, yesterday evening, BNP nominated candidate for Chittagong-8 (Chandgaon-Boalkhali) constituency and convener of the city BNP, Ershad Ullah, was seriously injured after being shot during a public meeting in Hamzarbagh Chalitali area under Bayezid Bostami police station. At that time, a leader of the volunteer party named Erfanul Haque Shanto was also shot.
