What DU Pro-Vice Chancellor Mamun said in a video message
Dhaka University (DU) Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed said that the incident of clash between DU and seven college students is ‘unwanted and regrettable’. He said this in a video message at around 1 am on Sunday.
In a video message, Dhaka University’s Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Mamun Ahmed said, ‘The unwanted incident that started last night during a discussion with seven college students in my office yesterday (Sunday) evening is regrettable. I am deeply shocked by this.’
Professor Mamun Ahmed said, ‘I believe that this misunderstanding will end through mutual discussions in a fair environment. I urge all parties to exercise patience to defuse the tension that has arisen between Dhaka University and students of seven colleges over this incident.
Earlier, students of seven colleges took a position outside the Mukti and Ganatra Torah of Dhaka University, alleging misconduct against Dhaka University’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Mamun Ahmed. On the other hand, students of F Rahman Hall took a position a little further inside the gate in front of the hall to stop the students of seven colleges. At one stage, a chase began between students of the two institutions at around 11:30 pm. The clash that lasted until 3 am turned Nilkhet intersection into a battlefield. Police fired tear gas and sound grenades in batches to control the situation. Later, 4 platoons of BGB were deployed in the area.
Meanwhile, Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the anti-discrimination student movement, reached the spot at around 1 am. However, he failed to bring the situation under control.
Seven people, including a pedestrian, were injured in the clash. The injured have been treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
