Voting begins for Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JACSU) elections
Voting has begun for the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JACSU) elections. Voting will continue from 9 am to 5 pm today, Thursday (September 11). Elections will also be held for the 21 residential halls of the university on the same day.
A total of 11,747 voters are registered in this election. A total of 178 candidates have been approved to contest for various posts. Out of these, 9 will contest for the posts of Vice President (VP), 9 General Secretary (GS), 6 Joint General Secretary (female) and 10 Joint General Secretary (male).
Voting will be held in 224 booths in 21 halls of the university. Out of these, 10 will be for the female student halls and 11 for the male student halls. There will be one returning officer, 67 polling officers and 67 assistant polling officers at each center. Voters will vote (tick marks) on a total of 40 ballots, including the central and hall parliaments. Votes will be counted in a special OMR machine.
Of the total candidates in Jaksur, 25 percent are women, the remaining 75 percent are men. No female candidate contested the VP post. Two out of 15 candidates are women for the GS post. There are no female candidates for the other four posts. 24.4 percent of the total candidates in all halls are women and there are no candidates for the 15 posts in five female halls.
A total of eight panels supported by Bam, Shibir, Chhatra Dal and independent candidates will participate in the election. Sheikh Sadi Hasan and Tanzila Hossain Boishakhi are contesting for the VP and GS posts respectively from Chhatra Dal. Bagchash’s ‘Shikharthi Oikya Forum’ will contest under the leadership of Arifuzzaman Ujjal and Abu Touhid Mohammad Siyam.
Abdur Rashid Jitu is the VP and Md. Shakil Ali is leading the GS post in the ‘Swatantra Chhatra Sammelan’ panel. Islami Chhatra Shibir will contest under the name ‘Sambinit Chhatra Jote’. Their VP candidates are Arifullah Adib and GS Mazharul Islam.
Sharan Ehsan will contest for the GS post, Nur A Tamim Srot for the AGS (Male) post and Faria Zaman Niki for the AGS (Female) post in the ‘Sampritir Oikya’ panel. The court has rejected the candidacy of Amartya Roy John, the VP candidate of this panel.
In the ‘Sangsaptak Paride’ of the Chhatra Union-Chhatra Front, Zahidul Islam Emon is contesting for the GS post and Sohagi Samia Jannatul Ferdous is contesting for the AGS-Female post.
