Voting begins for Chaksu elections
After a long 35 years, the Chittagong University Central Student Union and Hall Parliament elections have begun today. The right to vote is returning to the hands of 27,500 students of the university. After more than three decades, there is enthusiasm among the students surrounding the election festival. Voting will continue today, Wednesday (October 15) from 9 am to 4 pm in the five faculty buildings of the university. Since the announcement of the schedule, the candidates have been busy campaigning on shuttle trains, academic buildings, residential halls and social media.
The entire campus has been decorated with posters, leaflets, banners and manifestos on the occasion of the elections. There are a total of 27,517 voters in this election. Out of these, 16,084 are male and 11,434 are female.
A total of 908 candidates are contesting for Chaksu and Hall Parliament. Out of these, 415 candidates are contesting for 26 posts in Chaksu and 493 candidates are contesting for Hall Parliament. 48 female candidates and 366 male candidates are contesting in the Central Parliament. In addition, 24 candidates have been elected unopposed.
In Chaksu, 24 candidates are contesting for the post of VP, 22 for GS and 21 for AGS. A total of 350 candidates are contesting from 9 halls and one hostel in the Hall Parliament elections and 123 candidates from 5 girls’ halls. Law enforcement officials are on alert for this expected election.
Earlier, Shibir had sole dominance in Chittagong University since 1986. In the fourth Chaksu election in 1981, Chhatra Shibir won a single majority. As a result, 12 student organizations formed an all-party alliance against Shibir’s sole dominance in the 1990 elections. They won most of the posts. No further elections were held after that.
