Vinicius Junior has been named the winner of the prestigious FIFA The Best award, defeating stiff competition from Rodri and Lionel Messi. The award, presented on Tuesday night in Doha, Qatar, marks a significant achievement in the Brazilian forward’s career, as he claims the FIFA Player of the Year title for the first time.
While the main rivalry for the award was between Vinicius and Spain’s Rodri, there was an underlying, passionate fan battle between supporters of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Interestingly, it was Ronaldo’s fans who backed Vinicius, a Real Madrid star, and in the end, their support proved crucial.
Vinicius’s triumph comes just days after Spain’s Rodri Hernandez won the prestigious Ballon d’Or, beating Vinicius to the honor. But this time, it was the Brazilian’s turn to shine. The FIFA The Best award reflects Vinicius’s outstanding performance during the 2023-2024 season, where he scored 24 goals and provided 11 assists in 39 matches for Real Madrid. Vinicius outshone his Real Madrid teammate Jude Bellingham and Manchester City’s Rodri in the voting. While Rodri garnered 43 points and Bellingham received 37, Vinicius topped the rankings with a total of 48 points.
Since its introduction in 1991, the FIFA The Best award has been given annually to the world’s top football players. Vinicius becomes the sixth Brazilian to win the honor, joining an elite list of names, including Romario, Ronaldo Nazário (three times), Rivaldo, Ronaldinho (twice), and Kaka. Remarkably, it had been 17 years since a Brazilian last claimed the award, with Kaka being the most recent winner in 2007.
