US withdrawal from 66 international organizations
The United States has announced its withdrawal from 66 international organizations, including UN-related organizations. The White House said the decision was made based on an executive order by US President Donald Trump.
The executive order issued on Wednesday (January 7) said that the activities of these organizations are contrary to the national interests and sovereignty of the United States. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the review found that many organizations are aimless, mismanaged, and are being used to implement specific ideologies.
Rubio said that American taxpayer money will not be spent on organizations from which the United States has no benefit. However, cooperation with organizations that protect the interests of the people will continue. According to the list published by the White House, 31 of the withdrawn organizations are related to the United Nations and 35 other international organizations. The activities of several other organizations are currently under review.
