US sanctions Colombian president

The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on Colombian President Gustavo Petro, his wife and son, who are known to be fierce critics of US President Donald Trump. Treasury Secretary Scott Besant confirmed the information in a statement on Friday (October 24).
Calling the Colombian president a “patron of drug traffickers”, the US Treasury Secretary said that since President Gustavo Petro came to power, cocaine production in Colombia has skyrocketed. Since 2022, the amount of cocaine produced in Colombia has been higher than in the past few decades. This huge amount of cocaine is entering the United States like a flood and poisoning the lives of Americans.
He also said that instead of cracking down on these cocaine producers and traffickers, President Petro is patronizing them; But since our President Donald Trump is committed to protecting the nation from the scourge of drugs, and that is why we are taking such strong measures as imposing sanctions on the Colombian president. We will not tolerate drug trafficking in the United States.
Meanwhile, in a response to the sanctions, Gustavo Petro claimed that the Treasury Department’s statement was false. In a message posted on social media X, the Colombian president said that what the US Treasury Department is saying is false. During my government, cocaine production has not increased, but has decreased. The amount of cocaine seized during this government is more than any other country in the history of the world.
He ended his message with a slogan of the leftist revolutionaries of Latin America. That slogan is, ‘We will not retreat a single step and we will never kneel.’
