US Responds to Advisor Mahfuz’s Post and Sheikh Hasina’s Statement.
The United States (US) has shared its stance regarding recent events in Bangladesh, including a controversial social media post by interim government advisor Mahfuz Alam and the ban on broadcasting statements by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller addressed several pressing issues, including the situation on Bangladesh’s border with Myanmar and concerns about regional stability.
When questioned about Mahfuz Alam’s Facebook post, which included a map connecting parts of India (West Bengal, Tripura, Assam) to Bangladesh, Miller responded by saying he was unaware of the post. He added, “As a general rule, I do not comment on matters that I have not seen or am not aware of.” The journalist had raised concerns that such posts could potentially destabilize the region.
The topic shifted to the ban on the dissemination of Sheikh Hasina’s statements after her departure to India, particularly regarding hate speech linked to the July-August genocide case. Miller refrained from commenting, stating that he would not address the matter.
Regarding media freedom in Bangladesh, Miller reiterated the US’s consistent position: “We have been engaging with the Bangladesh government on this issue. The United States (US) believes that press freedom should be respected, and such cases should be dealt with in a manner consistent with the rule of law and respect for the press.”
Another journalist raised concerns about the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, which has reportedly come under control of the Arakan Army, an armed insurgent group. Miller acknowledged the situation, expressing concern about the potential for conflict and regional instability. He emphasized the US’s commitment to resolving the Rohingya refugee crisis, highlighting Bangladesh’s role in providing shelter to displaced Rohingyas and promising continued support to both Bangladesh and vulnerable communities in Myanmar.
The US continues to monitor these developments closely and maintains its focus on promoting peace and stability in the region.
