US airstrike in Syria kills al-Qaeda leader
A senior al-Qaeda leader has been killed in a US airstrike in Syria. The US military said on Sunday that a senior member of an al-Qaeda-linked armed group was killed in an airstrike in northwest Syria on Saturday.
The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that the US military carried out an airstrike in northwest Syria on Saturday targeting a senior finance and logistics officer for the al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group Hurras al-Din (HAD). CENTCOM did not identify the target.
The statement added that the strike was carried out to disrupt and undermine the terrorists’ efforts to plan, carry out and conduct attacks against US and allied civilians and military personnel.
On January 30, CENTCOM killed another senior Hurras al-Din official, Muhammad Salah al-Jabir, in an airstrike.
The US-based SITE Intelligence Group said Hurras al-Din was founded in February 2018. It had not publicly confirmed its allegiance to al-Qaeda until it announced its dissolution last month.
The US designated Hurras al-Din a “terrorist” organisation in 2019 and offered financial rewards for information on several of its members. “We will continue to operate against terrorists to protect our homeland and the United States, our allies and partners in the region,” CENTCOM General Michael Eric Kurilla said in a statement.
