Unemployment after higher education is alarming.
Education Advisor Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud said, there are various types of crises in the country’s higher education, which need to be resolved. Now unemployment after higher education is being created, which is alarming. He said these things while speaking as the chief guest at the ‘First Bangladesh Higher Education Conference-2024’ at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital yesterday.
At the conference titled ‘Global Standards in Higher Education: What Bangladesh Can Do’ organized by Banik Barta, the concerned people related to the country’s education highlighted various things to do. The education advisor said, now students go abroad after higher secondary, this should be stopped. Therefore, the quality of higher education in the country must be improved.
The advisor said, “There is a need to increase education and research in government and private universities.” He added that in the past, the country’s educational institutions were completely corrupt. We are working to stop them, that is why we are bringing qualified people for other appointments, including the vice-chancellor. Work is underway to bring back good teachers and researchers who are outside the country.
The education advisor questioned the quality of education at the National University, saying, “Due to political considerations, universities have been set up in districts. We do not understand why this has been done. We also need to think about what will happen to these students after their studies. There are no teachers in these places, there is no quality of education. As a result, we need to think about what will happen to these students after their studies.” He said the country’s higher education supervisory body, Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC), can be renamed as the Higher Education Commission and its powers can be increased. So that they can work in improving the quality of higher education and research.
UGC Chairman Professor Dr. SMA Fayez delivered a special guest speech at the conference. UGC member Professor Dr. Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan and BSMMU Vice-Chancellor (Interim) Professor Dr. Mohammad Shahinul Alam participated in the discussion over the administration and financing of public universities.
NSU Vice Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, UIU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kashem Mia, IUBAT Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Abdur Rob and Daffodil International University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. M Lutfar Rahman spoke about the quality of education, research, innovation and rankings.
