UN report on July genocide declared a historic document

The High Court has ordered to declare the UN report on human rights violations during the July-August uprising as a ‘historical document’. The court also asked the concerned ministries and departments to publish it in the form of a gazette within the next three months. A High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Mubina Assaf gave the verdict on Thursday (August 21). The court ordered that the report should be published in the form of a gazette within the next three months under the name ‘July Revolution-2024’. At the same time, the case has been declared as an ongoing case. The court also wants to know why the UN fact-finding report on the July-August genocide will not be preserved for future generations. Lawyer Md. Tanvir Ahmed said that the final verdict on the case was to be announced on August 3. However, the verdict was announced today, August 21, when the state sought time. After the order, lawyer Tanvir Ahmed said, “We filed a writ in August for the trial of the guilty. Then the court issued a rule. Accordingly, the government has taken steps. The tribunal has been re-established. The law has been amended. The investigation agency and the prosecution team are working. In the meantime, the UN fact-finding report has been published. The report says that 1,400 people were killed. The political interference at that time, how the violence was carried out, what the justice system was like, that is, a proper and complete report. He said, in our view, it should be preserved for three purposes. For future generations to know what happened. To preserve it as evidence. Although I have already learned that the tribunal has taken it. The fact-finding team of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has already reported on the human rights violations that occurred in Bangladesh from July 1 to August 15, 2024, and has already spoken to many protesters, including serious injuries. The report was published last February. The writ petitioner filed a supplementary petition in May of this year, adding the UN report.
