Ukraine attacks Russian nuclear power plant on Independence Day!

Amidst the possibility of a ceasefire, Moscow has accused Kiev of a drone attack on Russia’s Kursk nuclear power plant. Tensions are rising between the two countries over this. Tensions are rising again between Russia and Ukraine amid efforts to end the war mediated by Trump. Moscow claims that Kiev attacked the Kursk nuclear power plant early Sunday (August 24) local time. It is known that Russian troops shot down a drone near the power plant. The attack damaged part of the power grid and a transformer caught fire. This damaged the power supply system. However, authorities claim that radiation levels are normal. No casualties were reported in the incident. Kiev has not commented on the drone attack carried out on Ukraine’s Independence Day. However, the United Nations Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly called on both sides to exercise restraint in attacks near nuclear facilities. Meanwhile, the United States has approved the delivery of more than 3,500 air-launched cruise missiles to Ukraine, which are expected to arrive within the next six weeks. However, the Pentagon has imposed several restrictions on Ukraine from using the missiles received from the United States to attack Russian territory. The agency said that Kiev must obtain permission from the Pentagon to use these missiles. The decision is linked to Trump’s peace negotiation strategy, according to the US media outlet The Wall Street Journal. Meanwhile, Zelensky called on the Global South to exert international pressure on Russia to engage in peace talks. Accusing that Moscow wants to prolong the war, he said that the right steps by the world community are important to stop the war. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted the importance of trilateral talks in his meeting with Zelensky. He believes that a quick meeting is necessary to ensure progress in the peace talks.
