Typhoon Bualoi hits Vietnam, death toll rises to 19
Authorities confirmed on Tuesday (September 30) that the death toll from Typhoon Bualoi in Vietnam has risen to 19, with 21 people still missing, Reuters reported.
It is the most powerful typhoon to hit Vietnam this year, the report said. Bualoi is bringing heavy rain to the northern part of the country, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides.
Bualoi hit Vietnam’s north-central coast on Monday, bringing huge waves, strong winds and torrential rain. The typhoon killed at least 10 people in the Philippines last week.
The government said the storm injured 88 people, damaged more than 100,000 homes and submerged more than 10,000 hectares of rice and other crops. Most of this occurred in the provinces of Nha An and Ha Tinh.
The country’s National Meteorological Agency said more than 300 millimeters of rain fell in various parts of Vietnam in the past 24 hours.
It said heavy rains would continue in various areas, including the capital Hanoi. The rains could be accompanied by strong winds and lightning.
The agency warned that landslides and flash floods could occur in various areas in the next six hours.
The country’s state media reported that several villages in north-central Vietnam had been submerged as of Tuesday. There was no electricity and no vehicles could move.
Vietnam is often hit by deadly typhoons because of its long coastline along the South China Sea.
