Two arrested, including NCP member, for threatening schoolboy with gun
Police have arrested two youths, including a member of the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Rangpur Metropolitan Coordination Committee, on charges of threatening a schoolboy with a pistol in Rangpur. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tajhat Police Station in Rangpur Metropolitan Shahjahan Ali confirmed the arrest of two people with pistols on Tuesday (November 18) afternoon. It is learnt that when local students and the public detained the two youths and handed them over to the police, NCP leaders went to Tajhat Police Station to release them.
The two arrested youths are Ragib Hasnain (30) of the Rangpur Metropolitan NCP Coordination Committee and Rakibul Islam alias Tushar (28). Rakibul is said to be the first accused in the attack on the house of Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader in Rangpur.
Earlier, on Monday (November 17) at around 12 midnight, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Tofail Ahmed came to the police station and told us, “A case has been filed against them for threatening and intimidating them. They have been arrested. We have recovered a pistol. We need an expert opinion to know whether it is a pistol for firing. If it is a pistol, then a case will be filed against them under the Arms Act.”
Witnesses said that around 8 pm yesterday, two schoolchildren got into a fight over a love-related issue in front of Kawsar Academy at the intersection of the park adjacent to Begum Rokeya University. At that time, Ragib and Tushar arrived at the scene in support of one side. A student of Begum Rokeya University said, “After Rakibul pulled out a pistol and pointed it at a student’s head, the agitated students and the crowd surrounded them, beat them up and handed them over to the police.”
Last night, it was seen at the police station that after the incident, NCP’s Metropolitan Coordination Committee Joint Coordinator Alal Uddin Quaderi and other leaders were staying in and around the police station. They also tried to rescue the two youths by going to the officer-in-charge (OC) room.
Alauddin Quaderi, Joint Coordinator of the Rangpur Metropolitan Coordination Committee of the NCP, claimed to us inside the police station that the arrested Ragib is a member of the NCP. Rakibul is a supporter of the NCP. He claimed that they went there after hearing the news that Rakibul’s nephew had been beaten up at Park intersection. But people formed a mob and showed them toy pistols and handed them over to the police.
Shahjahan Ali, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tajhat Police Station in Rangpur Metropolitan said, “A case has been filed against the arrested persons on charges of fighting and intimidation by showing a pistol-like object. The pistol-like object has been sent to the ballistics branch. If it is a firearm, a case will be filed under the Arms Act.”
