Trump to meet Muslim world leaders on Gaza issue
US President Donald Trump will meet with leaders of several Muslim-majority countries on the ongoing war and humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The meeting is scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session on Tuesday (September 23). Reuters reported.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said that leaders or top officials from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia and Pakistan will attend the meeting. The main topic of discussion will be the war situation and governance in Gaza.
According to US media Axios, Trump is expected to discuss a peace proposal and a plan for a post-war Gaza governance structure at the meeting. The discussions will focus on the release of hostages, an end to the war, the withdrawal of Israeli troops and the establishment of a non-Hamas government.
Washington wants Arab and Muslim countries to send peacekeepers to Gaza so that Israeli troops can withdraw. At the same time, the countries will be asked to help finance the reconstruction and transition costs of Gaza.
Trump’s initiative comes at a time when many Western countries have taken a stand in favor of recognizing Palestine as a state at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France and Belgium have clearly stated that the only way to peace is a two-state solution.
Israel, however, has called the recognition “rewarding terrorism.” The United States has also publicly objected to the recognition.
