Trump threatens to impose 100 percent tariffs on Canada

US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on Canada if the announced trade deal with China goes ahead.
In a statement on social media Truth Social on Saturday (January 24), local time, Trump said, “China will use Canada to import their cheap goods into the United States. If Carney thinks so, he is making a big mistake.”
Trump also said, “If Canada makes a trade deal with China. Then all Canadian goods coming into the United States will be immediately subject to 100 percent tariffs.” It is noteworthy that Trump referred to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as “Governor Carney” instead of calling him the prime minister.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc wrote on micro-blogging site X yesterday, “They are not moving forward with free trade with China. The deal with China last week resolved some important issues related to tariffs.” He said that Canada’s new government is strengthening the Canadian economy. Its plan is to strengthen trade partnerships at home and abroad. Incidentally, Trump took office as president in January last year. He had already been threatening to impose tariffs on Canadian goods. He also called for Canada to become the 51st state of the United States.
