Trump, Putin agree to discuss ending Ukraine war in phone call

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. A meeting in this regard may be held in Saudi Arabia. Trump made this information after a phone call with Putin on Wednesday local time.

The British media outlet BBC reported in a report that the US president said that he had a long and fruitful discussion with Putin in the phone call. Trump also had a long phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the same day. This is a major step by Trump to end the Russia-Ukraine war, which has been going on for three years.

Trump discussed the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone, as well as other issues. The US President wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, “We discussed a variety of issues, including Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence.”

Trump said, “First of all, we both agreed that we want to stop the millions of deaths that are happening in the Russia-Ukraine war.”

After talking with the Russian president, Trump also spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the phone. Zelensky said that he had begun working with the US president on a permanent solution to end the war and establish peace.

Stating that he had fruitful discussions with both leaders, Trump said, “We had a great call and it went on for over an hour. I also had a very good call with President Zelensky. I think we are moving forward on the path to peace. President Putin and President Zelensky want peace. I just want to see people stop being killed.’

Earlier, on Wednesday, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that Ukraine’s accession to NATO was unrealistic. He said that the US’s priority now is to protect its own borders and confront China. So they will not prioritize the security of Europe or Ukraine.

After returning to power for the second time in the US, Trump said that he wanted an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine. Less than a month later, the US president took the initiative to implement that promise.

Incidentally, thousands of civilians have been killed in this Eastern European country since the Russian military began its all-out attack on Ukraine in February 2022. In this war that has lasted for almost three years, Russian forces have partially occupied four provinces of Ukraine – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia.

The combined area of the parts occupied by Russia in these four provinces is one-fifth of the total territory of Ukraine. Although neither of the two warring countries has released accurate figures on their own losses, Western intelligence agencies estimate the number of casualties to be in the hundreds of thousands.
