Trump praises Qatar’s role in implementing Gaza ceasefire
US President Donald Trump has praised Qatar’s role in implementing a ceasefire agreement in the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
On Saturday (October 25), Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met with Trump on Air Force One in Doha on their way to attend the ASEAN summit in Malaysia.
“We’ve done a lot together in the past year. Building peace in the Middle East – what we’ve achieved is incredible. Qatar has played a big role in that and I want to thank them for that,” Trump said.
Later, in a previous interview, the Qatari Emir said, “Meeting with Trump was a good opportunity to discuss the Middle East peace plan, the progress of the Gaza war-ending agreement and strengthening strategic cooperation between the two countries.”
“The ceasefire will hold, and if it breaks, it’s not hard to deal with Hamas,” Trump told reporters. The US president indicated that Qatar’s military would also participate if necessary to ensure a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. He said they were working together to achieve a lasting peace.
The US president said, “We have 59 countries involved now. Many countries have signed on. It should be a lasting peace.”
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is visiting Israel, said that a UN resolution or international approval may be needed to form a multinational security force in Gaza. After talks with Rubio, Israeli officials said that the peacekeeping force would be made up of countries that Israel “feels comfortable with.”
