Trump administration to lay off 1,600 USAID employees
The administration of President Donald Trump has furloughed or laid off most of the USAID staff in an effort to cut government spending. The notices were sent to them by midnight Sunday.
A notice published on the website of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) said that the agency will lay off about 1,600 employees in the United States in an effort to reduce federal staff and costs. In addition, about 4,200 employees have been furloughed.
The USAID notice also said that all other employees directly employed by USAID worldwide, except for “designated personnel” in key positions or leadership positions, will be placed on administrative leave.
The move is part of Trump’s effort to dismantle USAID. The agency employs more than 10,000 people around the world, which runs humanitarian and development programs. Earlier this month, the agency announced that all employees would be placed on administrative leave, but the directive has faced legal challenges. But on Friday, a federal judge lifted the Trump administration’s stay on implementing plans to reduce USAID spending.
