Trains will no longer run on Jamuna Bridge from today

After a long wait for the people of the northern region, passenger trains are running commercially on the Jamuna Rail Bridge before its inauguration. With this, train traffic on the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge has ended from today. Train traffic on the new bridge will play a role in the economic development of the country in addition to facilitating the transportation of the people of North Bengal.

Station Master Moniruzzaman of Sayedabad Railway Station confirmed this information at around 9:30 am today, Wednesday. He said that the Silk City Express train that left from Rajshahi first crossed the bridge.

Jamuna Rail Bridge Project Director Al Fattah Md. Masudur Rahman said that the Silk City Express passenger train crossed the Jamuna Rail Bridge at 10 am. The remaining trains will run in phases as per the schedule.

He also said that although the 4.8-kilometer-long Jamuna Rail Bridge has two lines, trains will initially run on one line in both directions. Trains from Dhaka will run on the right side line, i.e. the line on the north side of the bridge. For now, trains will run on one line in both directions.

However, the official inauguration will be held on February 18. Officials including the communication advisor will be present at the event. Train services will start on two lines from that day, said Jamuna Rail Bridge Project Director Al Fattah.

It is worth noting that the northwestern region’s rail connection with Dhaka was established after the bridge built over the Jamuna River was commissioned in 1998. However, in 2008, the speed of the train was reduced due to cracks appearing on the bridge. Currently, about 38 trains are crossing the bridge at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour every day. To address this problem, an initiative was taken to build a separate rail bridge upstream on the Jamuna River on March 3, 2020.

The government approved the plan to build a 4.80-kilometer-long dual-gauge double-track railway bridge. The foundation stone for the construction of the railway bridge was laid by the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on November 29, 2020. Then, piling work began in March 2021 to construct the pillars of the railway bridge.
