    Today is Ziaur Rahman’s birthday.

The 90th birthday of martyred President Ziaur Rahman Bir Uttam, the proclaimer of independence, the promoter of multi-party democracy and the founder of BNP, is today (January 19). He was born on this day in 1936 in Bagbari, Gabtoli, Bogra. His nickname was Kamal. BNP took up various programs to mark the day.

Ziaur Rahman’s father Mansur Rahman was a chemist by profession. After spending his childhood and adolescence in Bogra and Kolkata, he moved to his father’s workplace in Karachi. After completing his education, Ziaur Rahman was commissioned as an officer at the Pakistan Military Academy in 1955.

Ziaur Rahman, who had a colorful career, is revered by the people of Bangladesh as a great proclaimer of independence, a proponent of Bangladeshi nationalism and the founder of multi-party democracy. Although he started his career as a soldier, the hallmark of his life is that he repeatedly emerged as a savior in the country’s crises and freed the country from those crises. Ziaur Rahman not only declared the war of independence of Bangladesh, but also fought with arms. In addition, he led the war as a sector commander of the Liberation War. During the Indo-Pakistani War in 1965, he fought with immense courage in the Khemkaran sector.

After the then President Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family were killed on August 15, 1975, his colleague Khandaker Mushtaq Ahmed came to power. In the wake of various political changes and events, a united uprising of the sepoys and the people took place. During that extreme crisis of the country, Ziaur Rahman took the leadership with the joint efforts of the sepoys and the people.

After assuming power, Ziaur Rahman ensured multi-party democracy, freedom of speech and expression, and freedom of the press in the country. He worked until his death to make the country economically self-reliant.

Ziaur Rahman founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in response to the need of the time. Under the strong leadership of his wife, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, and his son Tarique Rahman, the party has gone through many ups and downs and is now recognized as the largest political party in the country. BNP has been in power thrice since independence.

Ziaur Rahman was martyred on May 30, 1981, at the Chittagong Circuit House by a group of rebel army personnel.

Statement by BNP Secretary General: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in a statement, prayed for the forgiveness of Ziaur Rahman’s soul and said that he was the nation’s guide in overcoming all the transitional periods of the country. After the Pakistani military attacked the people of Bangladesh on March 25, 1971, Ziaur Rahman captured the Pakistani commander and organized armed resistance. On March 26, he declared the independence of Bangladesh from Kalurghat Radio Station in Chittagong. When the country was in deep despair due to post-independence misery and authoritarian misrule and our progress as a nation was hampered, Ziaur Rahman took the leadership of the people at a crucial moment. Therefore, the anti-national conspirators considered him a thorn in their plans and brutally killed him.

On the birth anniversary of this statesman, the BNP Secretary General has called on the countrymen to work unitedly to protect independence and sovereignty; to establish democracy, people’s voting rights and human rights.

Program: On the occasion of Ziaur Rahman’s 90th birthday (89th birth anniversary), BNP standing committee members and leaders and activists from all walks of life will place wreaths at his shrine in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar today at 11 am and recite Fateha. In addition, a discussion meeting will be held at the Ramna Institution of Engineers-Bangladesh Auditorium at the initiative of BNP at 2 pm.
