There is no conflict between election and reform: Mirza Fakhrul

BNP celebrated the 90th birthday of party founder and former President Ziaur Rahman with various programs. Ziaur Rahman was born in Gabtoli, Bogra on January 19, 1936. Like every year, various programs including day-long discussions and poetry readings were celebrated across the country to mark the day. On this day, leaders, activists and supporters thronged Ziaur Rahman’s tomb in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

Around 11 am yesterday, a wreath was laid at Ziaur Rahman’s tomb under the leadership of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and a prayer was offered seeking forgiveness for his soul. After the program, the BNP Secretary General answered questions from journalists.

BNP has demanded elections between July-August. But many are saying that the demand is unrealistic. Elections and reforms are not possible so quickly; in response to such questions from journalists, Mirza Fakhrul said that there is no conflict between reforms and elections. Reforms will continue, elections will be held and whichever party comes to power will take the reforms forward. On behalf of our party, we can say that we will take every reform forward.

Mirza Fakhrul said, we will not comment on these reports of the Reform Commission right now. The government has said that after receiving the reports, they will discuss with the political parties and only then will a decision be made. None will be acceptable without consensus.

Mirza Fakhrul highlighted the colorful life and work of Ziaur Rahman. It was through Ziaur Rahman’s declaration of independence that people jumped into the liberation war. He took charge of the state and quickly started reforms in all areas to build a prosperous Bangladesh. He was the one who introduced a multi-party system from a single-party regime. His worthy successor, Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, is leading a fascism-free Bangladesh today and has played a remarkable role in the democratic movement of Bangladesh. We are hopeful that the government will take measures to return to democracy through quick elections.
