The secretaries of the Awami League era are on their way out.

The interim government has been trying to reorganize the administration for the last four months after the fall of the Awami government. It was alleged that because of some officials of the former government, it was not possible to restore the desired momentum in the administration here as well. As part of the reshuffle, the top posts of the administration (secretaries) have already been reshuffled.

Contractual appointments have also been made to the posts of secretaries in several important departments. As of now, posts of secretaries remain vacant in seven important departments that also include the newly vacated Public Security Department and Security Services Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Five more secretaries of the administration will leave in the next twenty days. Now the countdown is on for the departure of those who are still in the posts of the Awami government.

The Ministry of Public Administration said the service terms of Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat Secretary Dr. Md. Anwar Ullah, Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Mohd. Selim Uddin, Secretary of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs AKM Shamimul Haque Siddiqui, Secretary of the Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Department Abul Kashem Md. Mohiuddin and Secretary of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education Farid Ahmed.

It is learned that during the present government, 80 secretaries are in charge of the different ministries and departments of the administration. Of these 80, appointments to 38 were made in the previous Awami League tenure. Of the remaining 44, 13 have been appointed on contractual basis. Again, the process of appointing new secretaries to vacant posts is also underway.

When contacted in this regard, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration Mokhles Ur Rahman told our time, promotions and postings to the post of secretary in the administration are ongoing. This time we will be practical. We will try to give as much as is acceptable to the people.

But the senior officials who are seeking promotion to the top posts of the administration are opposing the contractual appointment, like a political government. Their argument is that the administration will gain more momentum if they are posted to the post of secretary with promotions. There are many officials in the administration even beyond those who were the backbone of the previous government. Some officials have also expressed their opinions that the posts can be filled with them.

Anti-Discrimination Employees’ Unity Forum expressed apprehension about the hand and existence of top officials appointed by the Awami government into the administration here also. The leaders of the organization asked, how the beneficiaries of the Awami regime are still in the administration? They claim that they have been deprived for the last 16 years. Although some have been promoted, they have been given dumping postings. They strongly demanded that the discrimination be removed as soon as possible.

Those who are still in office during the Awami regime are – Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Industries Zakia Sultana, Md.
