‘Don’t waste the second chance to build the country’

Professor Dr. Asif Nazrul has called for ensuring that the second chance to build the country that came in exchange for the sacrifices of the youth should not wasted in any way. He told reporters after paying tribute at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur on Saturday morning.

Dr. Asif Nazrul said, ‘Our July Uprising was a continuation of the dreams, convictions and patriotism with which the martyred intellectuals jumped into the struggle. Our youth and students, ignoring the illusion of life, fought for democracy, human rights, establishing a society free from discrimination and an exploitation-free society.

He also said, ‘In 1971, after the sacrifices of so many people and intellectuals, we failed to build the Bangladesh of our dreams. It was destroyed due to one-party mentality and the failure of a party. Today, we must take care that that failure is not repeated in any way.

Earlier, at 7 am, President Md. Shahabuddin paid homage to the nation’s best intellectuals at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur. Then, the Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus did the same at around 7:15 am. They stood there silently for some time.

Incidentally, on December 14, 1971, just two days before the final victory of the Bengali nation after the 9-month liberation war, the occupying Pakistani occupying forces and their domestic allies killed the best intellectuals of this country to demoralize the nation. Martyred Intellectuals Day is celebrated in Bangladesh every year on December 14 in memory of this brutal murder.
