The police’s self-confidence has not fully returned.

Even after five months of the change of government, the confidence of the police has not fully returned. Many police members do not want to take responsibility. Many police members are reluctant to participate in the operation to arrest the accused. There is also little interest in investigating political cases.

Members of this force are still distrustful of attacks on the police in various places. As a result, a large section of the police is trying to continue their jobs in some way. This is having a negative impact on the law and order situation in the country. This picture emerged after talking to 10 members of different levels of the police recently.

These police members told our time that no one is taking responsibility for the police. Senior officers are not taking responsibility for the field level police. Whenever any complaint is raised, they are transferred or temporarily suspended. Especially in the investigation of political cases, the independence of the investigating officers is less.

The case is investigated on the basis of information and evidence. Accordingly, even if you investigate the case, you have to face problems. Again, if you go with the flow, then there is a possibility of facing problems in the future. The police are now in both crises. So a section of the field police is trying to survive. This is affecting the overall security and law and order of the country.

A police inspector who has been serving as an OC in various police stations in the Chittagong range of the police for at least 7 years told our time yesterday, “If the job is available, I will get paid. If I lose my job, what will I eat with my family? So I am somehow continuing my job. I am not taking any risk. A section of the police personnel is doing this to save their lives,” he said.

The incident of entering the office of the DIG of the Mymensingh range of the police and making ‘threats’ on December 29 created a sensation among the field police. In the video that went viral on social media,

Mymensingh Deputy Inspector General of Police Ashrafur Rahman is seen sitting on a chair. Several people are making noise in front of him. Some are threatening loudly, some are complaining, some are asking questions and seeking answers. Discussions about this incident have reached the police headquarters.

Mymensingh Range DIG Ashrafur Rahman then said that a JSD leader had entered his room with some people in the name of the anti-discrimination student movement in the arrest of a city councilor.

Police officials said that it is difficult to work if this continues. The police have to be accountable only to senior police officers. If the police have to be accountable for any matter, it is difficult to work responsibly.

Former IGP Nurul Huda told our time yesterday that political leaders should understand that the investigation should be allowed to be done independently. There should be goodwill for this. Those who ultimately control us should also change their views. Whether they change or not, they have to work according to the law. Now it will be the job of the officers to ensure that their subordinates do not lose morale. The police are the main law enforcement agency of the state. If the morale of the police is broken now, it is not unthinkable for the society. How can a criminal offence be tried fairly if there is no proper investigation?

Regarding the investigation of the case, Nurul Huda said, the case must be investigated based on facts and evidence. Even if a political party believes that it is the reality, it is not the rule to work like this. Investigations are not conducted based on who saw whom, who said what. This misery has arisen because it was done this way before. He said, the government and the police must work together to overcome the existing crisis.
