The crowd dispersed the Chinmoy’s followers who were blocking Shahbagh.

Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, the leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), was arrested from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday afternoon.

He is the spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatani Jagran Jote and the principal of Pundarik Dham in Hathazari, Chittagong. After protesting in front of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch office on the news of his arrest, devotees gathered in Shahbagh to protest.

It has been alleged that when the traditional religious followers gathered around 8 pm on Monday, a group of youth attacked them. Several traditional religious followers were injured in the attack. Later, the protesters took out a procession and took up position at the foot of the Raju statue of Dhaka University (DU). There too, they demanded Chinmoy’s release and justice for the attack.

Saurabh Das, who is leading the movement demanding Chinmoy’s release, said, “We went to the DB office to find out why Chinmoy Das was taken into DB custody, but we were not given any reason. Later, when we took up position in Shahbagh, a group of people ambushed us. Several people were injured in the attack. They are undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College. We condemn the release of Chinmoy Das and the attack.” He also warned that a movement will be launched across the country if Chinmoy Das is not released.

A group of young men were seen sitting with chairs in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh intersection. Another group was roaming around with sticks in the presence of the police. When asked which party they belonged to, they said, “We are the general public. If we find Awami League, Chhatra League-Juba League, we will hand them over to the police; It is our moral responsibility as citizens.’

Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Khalid Mansur said, ‘When a group gathered in Shahbagh at night demanding Chinmoy’s release and wanted to barricade the road, the general public removed them from the road and normalized traffic. No one is known to have been injured in the incident. The situation is currently normal.’
