Tensions between two groups over BNP’s nomination for Comilla-5 constituency
There is intense unrest within the party over BNP’s nomination for Comilla-5 (Burichang-Brahmanpara) constituency. Tensions are ongoing between these two groups – Haji Jasimuddin Group and ATM Mizanur Rahman Group – over the change in nomination. BNP’s former member secretary of Comilla South district Haji Jasimuddin Jasim has received the party’s nomination. Since this announcement, both sides have been taking a stand against each other in the area.
Yesterday, Saturday (November 8) at 10 am, a group of BNP workers and supporters blocked the road in front of the Debpur police outpost on the Comilla-Sylhet highway and protested for an hour. They demanded that Haji Jasimuddin’s nomination be canceled and ATM Mizanur Rahman be renominated. During this, the protesters sat on the road and raised slogans.
On the other hand, Haji Jasimuddin’s supporters welcomed the party’s decision by holding a joyous procession with a paddy sheaf symbol. Haji Jasimuddin Jasim said, the party has nominated me. I want to gift this seat to BNP. The workers have emotions – some love me, some love Mizan Bhai. But we are all people of the same party. This grouping will be resolved very soon.
The party leaders and workers said – even if the party re-evaluates and nominates someone else, we will work for the party. We are not outside the party. Meanwhile, Burichang Upazila BNP President ATM Mizanur Rahman Chairman said, the party did not nominate me. My workers are protesting out of love – I did not ask anyone to take to the streets. I am not outside the party’s decision.
At this time, it has emerged in the political arena that partner parties like NCP, AB Party and Nagorik Oikya are also actively lobbying to change the declared candidate – they want to capture the seat for the partner party.
