Tension at Ibn Sina Hospital over patient’s death
There were clashes, chases and counter-chase incidents at Ibn Sina Hospital in Sylhet over the death of a patient. On Tuesday (September 16) night, clashes turned into a battlefield in the city’s Sobhanighat area. Eyewitnesses said that relatives of the deceased youth Tanim Ahmed, alleging negligence on the part of the doctors, attacked the nurses and staff of the hospital and tried to vandalize it. At one point, the hospital staff attacked the relatives with sticks and beat them. At least 5 relatives of the deceased were injured in this. They were rescued and admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. On receiving information, the police and the army quickly reached the spot and brought the situation under control. It is learnt that Tanim Ahmed, a resident of Golapganj, was seriously injured in a road accident on Airport Road on September 5. He was initially admitted to Osmani Hospital, but about 12 days ago he was transferred to the ICU of Ibn Sina Hospital. He died while undergoing treatment on Tuesday afternoon. Tanim’s relatives allege that his death was due to negligence of doctors and delay by the hospital authorities. Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam said Tanim’s body is still at Ibn Sina. Five people injured in the clash have been sent to Osmani Hospital.
