Tarique Rahman reveals what was discussed with Yunus in London
After almost two decades, Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of Bangladesh’s main political party BNP, has given an interview to the media. In this long interview given to BBC, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman answered questions about what was discussed with Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government in London, except for the elections. The interview was conducted by BBC Bangla editor Mir Sabbir and senior journalist Qadir Kallol. The second part of this interview, which lasted more than 44 minutes, was released by BBC Bangla on Tuesday (October 7) morning.
Regarding the meeting, Tarique Rahman said, “Naturally, he is a very respected person. He is a very knowledgeable person. Apart from that, of course, there was a naturally polite conversation. Apart from that, he also asked me that if the people give you a chance, what steps will you take for the country and the people of the country? These issues were discussed.
He said, my thoughts are about the people of the country, about the country. If we get a chance, if the people give us that chance, what steps will we take, there were some discussions on those issues.
You made a comment a few months ago that there is doubt in the public mind about the impartiality of the interim government. I asked the Chief Advisor about this comment of yours in an interview with him. What is his reaction to this? He said then that he has doubts. That is, he wants to know whether you have it in your mind. Do you have that doubt in your mind?
There is doubt in the public mind about the impartiality of the interim government. Based on previous statements like this, Tarique Rahman was asked whether you still have that doubt in your mind?
In response, Tarique Rahman said, Look when I said this I said that as far as I remember they did not say any exact time frame or anything about the elections.
What is meant by a roadmap, we did not say anything that we generally understand. And that is why not only in my mind, if we look at different media at that time, different media personalities who discussed political issues at different times and places, there was doubt in almost everyone’s mind.
When we saw that the interim head of government, Dr. Yunus, he roughly announced a roadmap. And later on several times he took a firm stand on the decisions he had taken. Since then, naturally this doubt has gradually started to disappear from the minds of many.
I think, as long as they remain steadfast in their words, the more firm they are in their words and actions, the more doubt will gradually disappear.
